The Roles of CBD & THC in Medicinal Cannabis

Cannabis is a complicated plant. Beyond the recreational psychoactive elements, cannabis is renowned for it’s medicinal and health benefits. It’s a multifaceted flora that has disrupted governmental policies, solved medical mysteries, and provided solutions to everyday discomforts. And, it’s one of the only substances to obtain a pardon, so to speak, from the Canadian government’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

After the criminalization of marijuana in 1923, cannabis’ long journey back to legalization was fraught with nationwide protests like 4/20 and hard-won legal battles. Eventually, as Canada saw in 2018, health and medicinal benefits won out, and cannabis was legalized. Legal, accredited research into cannabinoids and terpenes began taking place. The medicinal benefits of CBD and THC are finally being explored and the opportunities for growth seem boundless.

Now, barely one year later, the small BC town of Merritt is a growing leader in medicinal cannabis. We chose to situate our SKYE Life Ventures here because of their commitment to industry growth and opportunity. We’re pleased to offer Canadian citizens premium, organic cannabis produced using low-cost energy.

The future is green.

An Introduction: Cannabis, Cannabinoids, and the Human Body

Female cannabis flowers are full of cannabinoids — a chemical compound responsible for the health benefits and psychoactive effects of cannabis. Cannabis reacts so profoundly with humans because our bodies produce cannabinoids naturally on their own. We process the effects of cannabis’ cannabinoids through our endocannabinoid system, which is also responsible for an important role in the body’s health and healing.

While there are well over 100 different cannabinoids in cannabis, the two most well-known are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Due in part to legalization and the resulting scientific freedoms, we can now offer cannabis strains on a sliding scale of potency. Strains are bred and cross-bred for their differing cannabidiol percentages, amongst other factors.

THC is largely responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis, including euphoria and relaxation. Too much THC can result in anxiety, paranoia, or dizziness.

Health benefits of THC include nausea relief, increase in appetite and alleviation from insomnia. Because of these benefits, cannabis has often been prescribed to patients in chemotherapy.

Those sensitive to the negative effects of THC but still looking for the healing benefits of cannabis would do well with balanced strains or strains high in CBD.

The medical benefits of CBD are extensive. It’s been known to treat everything from anxiety to acne. And, CBD carries no psychoactive elements — for this reason, it’s been used to treat Dravet’s Syndrome, a potentially lethal epilepsy affecting infants and children. In 2011, CBD became widely popularized for its controversial yet effective use in Charlotte Figi’s case.

Common conditions treated by CBD:

  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders
  • Pain and inflammation
  • PTSD
  • Depression
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Opioid withdrawal

CBD & THC Together: The Entourage Effect in Medicinal Cannabis

While CBD and THC both have their benefits, the Entourage Effect suggests you need to experience ‘whole plant medicine’. Different parts of the cannabis plant interact with each other to create unique medical benefits. For example, when paired together, CBD lessens the anxiety and paranoia that THC may cause.
